Atiku Praises Yoruba People, Makes Promises Ahead of 2027

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has pledged that the Yoruba people will hold a central place in his policymaking and governance if elected president in 2027.
Atiku, now a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made this known in a statement issued by his media aide, Kola Johnson. He described the Yoruba as “one of the finest species of the human race” and stressed that his personal bond with the ethnic group is both familial and cultural.

The presidential hopeful recalled that his first wife, Titi Abubakar, is Yoruba, noting that their marriage in the 1970s produced four children. “My children with Titi sometimes call me Baba rere, meaning ‘good father’. I am extremely in love with my children and serve as a good father to them as I urge every father to do the same,” he said.
Atiku added that his Ijesha-born wife remains his “jewel of inestimable value”, emphasising that Yorubas have consistently been part of his closest circle in both private and public life. “Anyone who knows me will tell you that I am naturally a detribalised person. Even before politics, I flowed easily and effortlessly with people of diverse tribes, ethnicity, and religion,” he stated.

He dismissed concerns that his presidency might promote Hausa/Fulani dominance over other ethnic groups, particularly the Yoruba. “That fear is absolutely unfounded,” he said. “The Yoruba are my extended family and in-laws. Their interests will always occupy a topmost place in my governance, by the special grace of Allah.”
Highlighting the Yoruba’s sophistication and educational achievements, Atiku warned that no leader could afford to ignore their influence. “You can only toy with them at your own peril,” he noted.

The former Vice President maintained that his union with a Yoruba woman had further strengthened his deep affection for the South-West region, declaring: “I see the larger Yoruba landscape as my home and its people as my extended family.”
