The political camp of former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has suffered another setback following the defection of the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Sa’idu Umar, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Umar, a former Commissioner for Finance and Secretary to the Sokoto State Government under the Tambuwal administration, formally joined the APC during a meeting with the party’s leader in Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja.
His defection was announced by Wamakko’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Bashar Abubakar.
Why I Dumped PDP – Umar
Speaking on his decision to leave the PDP, Umar said he was persuaded by the leadership of Senator Wamakko and the performance of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s administration.

Wamakko Welcomes Defection
Welcoming Umar into the APC, Senator Wamakko described the development as a significant gain for the party and a sign of growing public confidence in its leadership.
He assured the former PDP governorship candidate and his supporters of equal opportunities within the party, adding that the APC remained open to individuals committed to promoting peace, unity and development in Sokoto State.
A Key Tambuwal Associate
Before contesting the 2023 governorship election on the PDP platform, Umar served as Commissioner for Finance and later Secretary to the Sokoto State Government during the administration of former Governor Tambuwal, making him one of the ex-governor’s close political associates.
