PenCom: Retirees to Get Pension Benefits Within 48 Hours

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) says eligible retirees can receive their retirement benefits within 48 hours of completing the required application process and submitting the necessary documents.

The Head of Corporate Communications at PenCom, Ibrahim Buwai, further explains this after the PenCom Boss disclosure during a technical session at the 2026 PenCom Media Conference in Abuja.

The Director-General of PenCom, Omolola Oloworaran, had earlier disclosed the development on Tuesday during her keynote address at the conference.

Oloworaran also highlighted improvements in the processing of retirement benefits, saying the approval period had been reduced from as long as 21 months to 48 hours.

However, during Buwai’s paper presentation titled “Two Years of Historic Pension Transformation: What the Numbers Mean”, he said the commission had taken steps to reduce delays in processing retirement benefits by returning relevant payment-processing responsibilities to Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) and state governments, as applicable.

He stressed that retirees must submit the required documents to enable the relevant authorities to verify their identities and process their benefits.

He advised workers approaching retirement to conclude their documentation 6 months ahead of time to avoid unnecessary delays.

He added that PenCom was monitoring the payment process and could take enforcement action where necessary.

Buwai also disclosed that a retiree under the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund pension arrangement had seen monthly pension payments rise from ₦18,000 to ₦206,000, alongside arrears exceeding ₦8 million.

He attributed the increase to investment returns generated by the pension fund, explaining that PenCom assessed the investment performance and sustainability of the proposed adjustment before implementing it.

According to him, the new monthly payment represents an increase of approximately 1,044 per cent over the previous ₦18,000.

Buwai described the case as unusual, noting that the retiree had not specifically campaigned or applied for the increase before the adjustment was made.

He said the commission was making arrangements to present the beneficiary to the media to demonstrate the outcome of the pension enhancement.

The PenCom spokesperson explained that investment returns could improve retirement income, particularly for retirees who depend on monthly pension payments to meet their needs.

He added that some retirees continued to record increases in their retirement savings account balances years after retirement, reflecting returns generated from their investments.

PenCom Reports Clearance Of 21 Months’ Pension Arrears

Buwai said the commission had also addressed outstanding pension arrears that previously caused payment delays for federal government retirees under the relevant pension arrangements.

He disclosed that some pensioners had experienced delays of up to 21 months because the federal government had not released the funds required for their payments.

According to him, the outstanding arrears have since been cleared.

He urged eligible federal government employees to complete the necessary enrolment and documentation before retirement to facilitate the timely processing of their benefits.

Buwai also highlighted adjustments to pension payments arising from salary increases and consequential adjustments to retirement benefits, saying the measures were intended to improve the income of eligible pensioners.

PenCom Strengthens Enforcement Against Defaulting Employers

The PenCom official said the commission had strengthened enforcement measures to ensure employers remit pension contributions as required by law.

He disclosed that one of the measures involved restricting companies that failed to remit pension contributions from undertaking certain business transactions covered by the enforcement policy.

According to him, the measure was yielding results, although complaints about unpaid pension contributions remained a concern.

He maintained that the commission was taking steps to improve compliance and protect workers’ retirement savings.

FG Pays ₦1.1bn Gratuity to 175 Retirees

Buwai further disclosed that 175 retirees had received a total of ₦1.1 billion under an additional gratuity arrangement introduced by the Federal Government.

He explained that the gratuity was separate from the Retirement Savings Account under the Contributory Pension Scheme and would be paid as a lump sum to eligible retirees.

According to him, funds released for the programme were sufficient to cover eligible workers retiring in 2026, while applications would be processed as they were received.

He encouraged other employers to consider additional retirement benefits for their employees, noting that the Pension Reform Act 2014 permits employers to provide benefits beyond the statutory pension arrangements.

Buwai said the Federal Government’s initiative could serve as an example for employers seeking to strengthen retirement protection for their workers.

Pension Reforms Target Improved Retirement Welfare

The developments form part of measures highlighted at the 2026 PenCom Media Conference to improve pension administration, strengthen employer compliance and ensure retirees receive their entitlements without unnecessary delays.

Buwai maintained that pensioners remained central to the commission’s work, adding that PenCom would continue to monitor pension fund investments and the payment of retirement benefits.

The conference brought together media professionals and stakeholders to examine developments in Nigeria’s pension industry and assess the outcomes of reforms implemented over the preceding two years.
