The Federal Government has launched a National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System aimed at improving how businesses and public services reach communities across the country.
The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, announced the launch on X on Thursday.
He said the system would provide a foundation for integrating postcodes into commerce, transport, healthcare, agriculture, emergency response and other areas of everyday life.
Tijani said the launch was only the first step, adding that its impact would depend on how widely the system is integrated into the activities of Nigerians, businesses and government.
“Launching Nigeria’s National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is the first step,” he said.
“Its true impact will come as we weave it into how we live, do business, connect with one another and deliver services across every corner of our country.”

The minister said each postcode should have a practical use, including helping businesses reach customers, completing deliveries, improving community services and ensuring emergency assistance reaches people who need it.
“Every postcode should mean something tangible: a customer reached, a delivery completed, a community better served, or emergency help arriving where it is needed,” Tijani said.
He said his office would work with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), government institutions, businesses and technology companies in the coming weeks and months to integrate the postcode system into everyday activities.
Tijani also urged developers and innovators to build products and services around the new system through its application programming interface (API), which provides the technical foundation for integrating the postcode into digital platforms.
“The API provides a foundation for integrating the postcode into the products and services Nigerians use every day,” he said.
According to him, organisations seeking access to the API must first create an organisation account and submit their Know Your Business documentation.
They can then request API access based on their required access level, receive staging tokens for development and testing, and complete User Acceptance Testing with NIPOST’s technical and compliance teams where required.
He hinted that successful organisations will subsequently receive production tokens and be able to launch their integrations.
Tijani also called on developers, businesses and other stakeholders to propose ways the alphanumeric postcode could be used to solve practical problems.
He asked stakeholders to consider how the system could be embedded in commerce, transport, healthcare, agriculture, emergency response and community life.
“What would you build, and what problem would it solve?” he added.
