The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), has begun the implementation of a new Taxpayer Identification (Tax ID) system for all taxable persons in Nigeria.
The agencies announced the rollout in a public notice issued on Monday, May 18, saying the initiative is in line with Sections 6, 7 and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which require every taxable person in the country to obtain a Tax ID.
According to the NRS and JRB, the new system is aimed at strengthening tax administration, improving transparency and enhancing service delivery across Nigeria’s tax system.
“The Tax ID will serve as a single, unified identity for all taxpayers, enabling seamless interaction with tax authorities at both federal and sub-national levels,” the authorities stated.
According to them, the system is designed to combine taxpayer records, remove duplication and improve the management of tax-related information.

They added that the Tax ID will provide one identity for all tax transactions and engagements, while making registration, tax filing and payment easier for taxpayers.
Other expected benefits include improved tracking of taxpayer records, reduced tax leakages, stronger accountability and better alignment of taxpayer information across all levels of government.
As part of the transition, the NRS and JRB announced that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions and other organisations.
“All Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), financial institutions, and other organisations currently utilising the TIN Validation API are hereby notified that the new Tax ID system will replace the existing TIN Validation API,” they said.
The agencies advised organisations seeking integration or validation services for Tax IDs linked to individuals, enterprises and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the JRB.
Corporate entities requiring similar services were directed to work with the Tax Automation Department of the NRS for access to the Tax ID API and integration guidelines.
The NRS and JRB said the move forms part of ongoing efforts to modernise Nigeria’s tax administration system and build a more efficient and transparent tax framework.
