Nigeria’s Aviation Sector Generates $2.5bn, 217, 000 Jobs Annually

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has revealed that Nigeria’s air transport sector contributes $2.5 billion annually to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP)—representing 0.7 per cent—and supports more than 217,000 jobs across the economy.
This was disclosed by IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi, in a statement commemorating Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary.
Alawadhi stressed that aviation plays a pivotal role in driving national growth, enabling trade, investment, and tourism.
“Aviation is a powerful engine for economic and social development. Air transport supports over 217,000 jobs and contributes $2.5 billion to Nigeria’s GDP. With one of the fastest-growing populations in Africa and a predominantly young demographic, there is immense opportunity for future economic growth,” he said.

Nigeria’s Air Travel and Connectivity
According to IATA’s 2023 statistics, international air traffic accounted for 23 per cent of total origin-destination departures from Nigeria, translating to 2.1 million international passenger departures.
Europe remains the largest international market for Nigerian travellers, with 780,700 passengers (38 per cent of the total) flying to European destinations in 2023. This was followed by 485,400 passengers (23 per cent) to other African countries and 373,000 passengers (18 per cent) to North America.
In addition, Nigerian airports handled 195,700 tonnes of air cargo in 2023, bolstering import and export volumes vital to the economy.
Direct and Indirect Contributions
IATA highlighted that 39,500 people are directly employed in Nigeria’s aviation industry, generating $702 million in economic output, equivalent to 0.2 per cent of GDP. When factoring in the wider supply chain, employee spending, and tourism, the sector’s total impact rises to $2.5 billion and 216,700 jobs.

Tourism supported by aviation alone contributes $454.1 million to GDP, employing 66,600 people, while international tourists spend an estimated $760.2 million annually in Nigeria.
Aviation’s Wider Benefits
Alawadhi noted that aviation’s impact extends beyond direct financial contributions.
“By swiftly and safely connecting people in different cities, air transport generates benefits to consumers and the wider economy. It makes the world smaller, enriching lives and enhancing cultural diversity. In rural and remote areas, air transport provides an essential lifeline for communities, safeguarding access to healthcare, education, and employment,” he explained.
