Jurist dies after brief illness in Maiduguri
The Federal High Court (FHC) has announced the death of its retired judge, Justice Baba-Gana Ashigar, describing him as a distinguished jurist whose dedication to justice and integrity left a lasting impact on Nigeria’s judiciary.
Justice Ashigar died after a brief illness in Maiduguri, Borno State, where he was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
The Director of Information, Federal High Court, Catherine-Oby Christopher, disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
Court Pays Tribute
The court said Justice Ashigar served the country with diligence, dedication and an unwavering commitment to the administration of justice throughout his years on the bench.
According to the statement, his contributions to the judiciary and the legal profession will remain memorable to judges, lawyers, court officials and others who worked closely with him.
“The Chief Judge, judges, management and staff of the Federal High Court extend their heartfelt condolences to his immediate family and pray that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss,” the statement read.

The court also prayed for the repose of his soul, saying, “May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.”
Legacy of Landmark Judgments
Justice Ashigar will also be remembered for several notable decisions during his judicial career, including a landmark judgment delivered in September 2022 ahead of the 2023 general elections.
In that ruling, he nullified the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial primary elections for Kebbi Central and Kebbi North, leading to the disqualification of former Kebbi State Governor, Adamu Aliero, and former Senate Leader, Yahya Abdullahi, from contesting the 2023 elections on the PDP platform.
The Federal High Court said his judgments, known for their courage, impartiality and respect for the rule of law, earned him widespread respect within the legal community and strengthened public confidence in the judiciary.
It added that his legacy of fairness, discipline and service to justice would continue to inspire future generations of judges and legal practitioners.
