Dangote Refinery has debunked reports claiming that it imported substandard Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol, into Nigeria.

Some reports had claimed that the refinery imported petrol which contains a high level of sulphur.

However, in a statement released Friday, October 10, 2025, the refinery management described the reports as “false, malicious, and misleading”.

The company said that as a world-scale, complex refinery, it processes a range of crude oils and intermediate feedstocks, which is a standard global practice aimed at optimising production and quality.

It explained that the cargo in question is an intermediate feedstock, not finished petrol, and will be fully processed in the refinery to meet Nigerian and international quality standards.

An intermediate feedstock is a partially refined or unrefined product from crude oil that requires further processing to become a final usable fuel. Such is not a finished product like gasoline or diesel, but a raw material that still requires passing through further refining processes. Refineries use these intermediate products to optimise the production of various high-quality fuels that meet specific standards.

Dangote Refinery stressed that as a company that operates within the Free Trade Zone, it refines and sells only high-quality fuels, compliant with all regulatory standards.

“Our exports of petroleum products to the United States and Europe, among the world’s most regulated markets, underscore our adherence to global benchmarks.

“All imports are accompanied by quality certificates and shared transparently with regulators,” it stated.

The company further said it is willing to tender documents regarding the product it imported to the public in the interest of transparency and accountability.
