Wike Finally Reveals Why Fubara Withdrew From Governorship Race

FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, says the impeachment process against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, was discontinued based on an agreement that the governor would not seek re-election.

Wike stated this on Monday after inspecting infrastructural projects in Abuja, while reacting to Fubara’s withdrawal from the Rivers State All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary.

Fubara had stepped down from the race a day before the primary election, saying his decision was based on “conviction and sacrifice for the state to move forward in peace and unity.”

Following his withdrawal, Kingsley Chinda, a member of the House of Representatives and ally of Wike, emerged winner of the APC governorship primary held on May 21.
Wike said he was not surprised by Fubara’s action, insisting the governor should not have obtained the nomination form in the first place.

“In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form because the agreement was reached that impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not talk about a second tenure,” Wike said.

The FCT minister and Fubara have been locked in a prolonged political dispute that once led to impeachment moves against the governor.

Most members of the Rivers State House of Assembly who supported the impeachment process are allies of Wike.

Wike had earlier vowed to oppose Fubara’s re-election bid, accusing him of breaching a peace agreement reached under the supervision of President Bola Tinubu.
