The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over his recent comments on the party’s vice-presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, urging him to stop what it described as repeated verbal attacks.
The party also dismissed Wike’s assertion that the outcome of the 2027 election in Rivers State had already been determined, insisting that only the electorate can decide who wins at the polls.
The position of the party was contained in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday by Chizi Enyi, Publicity Secretary of the ADC, the Rivers State chapter.
The statement was in response to comments made by Wike during his monthly media chat in Abuja, where he claimed that Amaechi no longer possesses the political influence to win elections in Rivers State.
‘Attacks Show Anxiety, not Confidence’
The ADC said Wike’s continued criticism of Amaechi contradicts his repeated claim that the opposition poses no threat.
According to the party, the minister’s repeated attacks suggest concern over the growing acceptance of the opposition rather than political confidence.

“It is ironic that someone who insists the opposition is politically irrelevant continues to devote so much time and energy attacking those he says have no electoral value. Such contradictions betray anxiety rather than confidence,” the statement said.
The party maintained that Amaechi remains one of Rivers State’s most influential political figures, adding that his record in governance and national service does not require validation from political opponents.
Every election is Different, ADC Insists
The party rejected Wike’s reliance on previous election outcomes, stressing that every election is shaped by prevailing political realities and the decision of voters.
It said no individual has the power to predetermine the outcome of the 2027 election, noting that democracy is ultimately decided at the ballot box.
According to the ADC, Rivers people are more concerned about issues affecting their daily lives, including economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment, poor infrastructure and the welfare of citizens, rather than political quarrels.
Focus on Governance, Rivers ADC Tells Wike
The party further accused the FCT minister of attempting to portray himself as the sole authority over Rivers politics, insisting that the state belongs to its people and not to any individual.
It said the ADC would continue to engage residents with its programmes and policy proposals instead of exchanging insults with political opponents.
The party advised Wike to focus on the administration of the Federal Capital Territory and allow Rivers voters to make their choices freely in the 2027 general election.
The party further expressed confidence that the will of the people would prevail when Nigerians go to the polls.
