The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has named former Rivers State governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as the running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued on Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
According to the party, the decision followed consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women groups, and representatives from the country’s six geopolitical zones.
“The National Leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), after extensive consultations with party leaders, coalition partners, youth and women stakeholders, and representatives of all geopolitical zones, is proud to announce that Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has been selected as the Vice-Presidential Candidate of our great party for the 2027 Presidential Election,” the statement said.
Pinnacle Daily reports that the development comes days after Amaechi lost the party’s presidential primary to Atiku.
Atiku emerged as the ADC presidential candidate after defeating Amaechi and former banker, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, in the primary election held at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja.

Official results released by the party showed that Atiku secured 1,846,370 votes, while Amaechi polled 504,117 votes and Hayatu-Deen received 177,120 votes, to clinch victory.
Following the conclusion of the primary, the party leadership, led by David Mark, presented the ADC flag to Atiku as its standard bearer for the 2027 election.
Explaining the choice of Amaechi as running mate in the statement on Monday, the ADC said the former transportation minister’s performance in the primary and his extensive public service experience made him a suitable partner for Atiku.
“This recommendation follows the successful conclusion of the ADC Presidential Primaries, in which Rt. Hon. Amaechi emerged as the runner-up, earning widespread support from party members across the federation and demonstrating his enduring appeal as one of Nigeria’s most experienced and respected political leaders,” the party stated.
The ADC described the Atiku-Amaechi ticket as a combination of two experienced political figures with the capacity to address Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges.
“The proposed partnership between His Excellency Atiku Abubakar and Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi represents more than a political alliance; it is the coming together of two tested statesmen with the experience, national reach, and leadership capacity required to rescue Nigeria from its current challenges and reposition the country for a new era of prosperity, security, and inclusive development,” Abdullahi said.
The party highlighted Amaechi’s record as former Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor of Rivers State, and Minister of Transportation, saying his experience across both the legislative and executive arms of government would strengthen a future ADC administration.
It also said Amaechi’s political influence in the South-South and other parts of Southern Nigeria would complement Atiku’s candidacy and help broaden the party’s appeal across the country.
The ADC added that the Atiku-Amaechi ticket “embodies a truly national ticket” capable of bridging regional and political divides while offering Nigerians an alternative platform focused on economic recovery, security, job creation, and national unity.
The party called on its members, coalition partners, civil society groups, youth organisations, and women leaders to support the ticket ahead of the 2027 election.
