The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has warned President Bola Tinubu and the Department of State Services (DSS) that Nigeria risks an unprecedented crisis if its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, continues to suffer deteriorating health without proper medical attention.

IPOB’s spokesman, Emma Powerful, in a statement on Tuesday, described Kanu as “priceless”, stressing that any harm to him could plunge Nigeria and the wider region into turmoil.

“Let it be clearly understood: Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is priceless, and no amount of blackmail, judicial rascality, or DSS-induced health crisis will be tolerated. Nigeria is toying with a catastrophe that could engulf not only its borders but the entire region,” the statement read in part.

Drawing a historical parallel, Powerful recalled the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo in 1914, which triggered the First World War, noting that “history teaches bitter lessons.”

He accused the Nigerian government, the DSS, and what he called “their international collaborators” of endangering Kanu’s life, demanding his unconditional release.

“A worsening of his medical condition will ignite a crisis the likes of which Nigeria and its foreign backers have never imagined. The games being played with the life of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu are reckless, provocative, and unsustainable,” he said.

IPOB also appealed to international bodies, human rights groups, and global peace advocates to prevail on the Nigerian authorities to “do the right thing before it is too late”, warning that the group would not be held responsible for the consequences if the situation escalates.
