The Department of State Services (DSS) has rejected claims that detained Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu is suffering deteriorating health. The agency also opposed his request to transfer to the National Hospital, Abuja, for treatment.
In a 37-paragraph counter-affidavit, DSS described the report by Kanu’s medical consultant, Prof. Martin Aghaji, as exaggerated and speculative. The agency said it has excellent medical facilities and qualified personnel capable of managing Kanu’s health.
Dr Mohammed Nasir, a DSS medical officer, stated that Kanu is stable and comfortable and receives meals of his choice.
Specialists from the National Hospital and University of Abuja Teaching Hospital attend to him when requested.

The DSS opposed moving Kanu to the National Hospital, citing security risks. The agency argued that safeguarding him outside its custody would require heavy militarisation, which could inconvenience other patients. DSS also said its own facilities can effectively manage Kanu’s conditions.
The DSS recalled that Kanu entered custody in 2021 with hypertension, hypertensive heart disease, low potassium levels, and recurrent nosebleeds.
It said medical protocols had successfully managed these conditions until Prof. Aghaji disrupted treatment by making unilateral adjustments.
DSS warned that Aghaji’s letter exaggerating Kanu’s health issues lacked credibility.
Kanu, through lawyer Chief Kanu Godwin Agabi (SAN), filed a motion to transfer him to the National Hospital. He claimed tests revealed pancreatic and liver issues, low potassium, and an emerging lump under his armpit.

His younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu, said the transfer was urgent to prevent further health decline.
The Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday declined to hear the motion. Justice Musa Liman said his vacation judge fiat had expired, leaving him without jurisdiction. The case will return when the regular court resumes sessions.
