The remains of former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, have been laid to rest at the Gudu Cemetery in Apo, Abuja.
Idris, who died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, at the age of 77 in a hospital in the United Kingdom after an illness, was buried on Friday according to Islamic rites.

The burial brought together political leaders from Kogi State, including the incumbent governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, former governors Idris Ichalla Wada and Yahaya Adoza Bello, members of the deceased’s family, political associates, government officials, traditional leaders and sympathisers.
Kogi Leaders Pay Final Respects
The remains of the former governor arrived at the International Wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, from the United Kingdom, where Governor Ododo and other Kogi leaders received them.
Ododo was accompanied by his deputy, Comrade Joel Salifu Oyibo, former Governors Yahaya Bello, Idris Wada, as well as government officials, political leaders, members of the family and sympathisers.
From the airport, the remains were taken to the National Mosque, Abuja, where the Janazah prayer was conducted in accordance with Islamic tradition.
The prayer was led by the Chief Imam of the National Mosque before the remains were conveyed to Gudu Cemetery in Apo for the final burial.
At the cemetery, family members, political associates, government officials and other mourners observed the final burial rites and offered prayers for the deceased.
The funeral also provided an opportunity for past and present political leaders in Kogi State to gather in honour of the former governor.
Following Idris’ death, Governor Ododo had visited the bereaved family at their Abuja residence, accompanied by former Governor Yahaya Bello and senior government officials, to convey the condolences of the Kogi State Government and people.
Ododo described the death as a significant loss to Kogi State and Nigeria, while praying for the repose of Idris’ soul and strength for his family.
Idris Tenure As Kogi Governor
Idris served as governor of Kogi State from 2003 and returned to office in 2008, remaining in office until January 2012.
His administration was associated with interventions in infrastructure, education, healthcare and housing, according to tributes issued by the Kogi State Government following his death.
With his burial, Idris’ public service journey has come to an end, leaving behind his family, political associates and followers, as well as a record of his years in the leadership of Kogi State.
Kogi leaders further prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Aljanat Firdaus and give his family, associates and the people of Kogi State the strength to bear his loss.
