Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has called for the immediate prosecution of suspects arrested over the murder of a housewife and her six children in Dorayi Quarters, Kano.

Ganduje condemned the killings, describing the incident as tragic, inhuman, and deeply disturbing, while commending the Nigeria Police for the swift arrest of those linked to the crime.

In a statement issued by his Chief of Staff, Comrade Muhammad Garba, the former governor expressed sadness over the incident and extended condolences to the bereaved family and residents of Dorayi Chiranci in Gwale Local Government Area.

He said the killings highlighted the urgent need for sustained efforts to protect innocent lives and preserve peace in society.

Ganduje also praised the Kano State Police Command for its prompt response and urged security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and diligent prosecution of all those involved.

“The speed and professionalism demonstrated by the Kano State Police Command are reassuring. Justice must be pursued to its logical conclusion to serve as a deterrent,” he said.

Barau Hails Arrests, Demands Speedy Trial

The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, also commended the Kano State Police Command for arresting three suspects in connection with the killings.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Malam Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau described the arrests as comforting and called for a speedy trial of the suspects.

“I commend the command for its swiftness. This is the first step. A thorough investigation and speedy trial must follow to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice,” he said, describing the killings as barbaric and beyond comprehension.

Police Name Suspects, Recover Exhibits

The Kano State Police Command identified the suspects as Umar Auwalu, 23, of Sabuwar Gandu Quarters; Isyaku Yakubu, also known as Chebe, 40, of Sagagi Quarters; and Yakubu Abdulaziz, also known as Wawo, 21, of Sabon Gida Sharada Quarters, all in Kano.

According to the command’s spokesperson, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the arrests followed intelligence-led operations carried out on the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.

He said the suspects were apprehended during a sting operation conducted between the night of January 17 and the early hours of January 18, 2026, under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori.

Kiyawa disclosed that Umar Auwalu, identified as the leader of the syndicate and a nephew of the deceased woman, confessed to the crime and admitted involvement in other violent attacks in Kano, including the killing of two housewives in Tudun Yola Quarters.

Items recovered from the suspects included blood-stained clothes, two mobile phones belonging to the deceased, a cutlass, a club and some cash. Investigation is ongoing, the police said.

The victims were identified as Fatima Abubakar, 35, and her six children. The assailants reportedly invaded their residence in Dorayi Chiranci Quarters in the early hours of Saturday, killing the woman and her children, including an infant allegedly thrown into a well.
