Yakubu Hands Over INEC Leadership to Agbamuche-Mbu as Acting Chairman

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has handed over the leadership of the commission to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, who will serve as Acting Chairman.
The handover ceremony took place on Tuesday during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the INEC headquarters in Abuja.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, the oldest serving National Commissioner at INEC, will oversee the affairs of the electoral body pending the appointment of a substantive chairman.
Announcing the transition, Professor Yakubu urged staff and commissioners to give their full cooperation to the new acting head.

“I have today handed over to Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu as the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission. I urge all commissioners and directors to give her the same level of cooperation and dedication that you have shown me,” Yakubu said.
The development marks a temporary leadership shift within the commission as it intensifies preparations for upcoming electoral activities nationwide.
Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu, a seasoned lawyer and administrator, has been part of the INEC management team since her appointment as a National Commissioner. She is expected to ensure continuity in the commission’s ongoing reforms and programmes aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s electoral process.
