Tinubu Reaffirms Nigeria’s Bid to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s determination to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, a move that would make the country the first on the African continent to stage the prestigious sporting event.
Tinubu’s commitment was conveyed in Abuja by Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), during a reception for members of the Commonwealth Sport Bid Evaluation Committee, who are in Nigeria as part of the ongoing bid assessment process.

Dikko stressed that President Tinubu regards the bid as a landmark opportunity. “The President views hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2030, should we succeed, as a celebration of Nigeria’s rising status in global sport, beyond just participation,” he said.
He further noted that Nigeria’s bid highlights Abuja’s modern infrastructure and readiness to stage Games of international standard.
Hon. Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the NSC, reinforced Nigeria’s confidence in securing the hosting rights, pointing to the country’s robust preparations. “The key elements of a successful bid are facilities, political will, private sector support, and public passion. Our bid delivers all of these and more,” he explained.
Olopade revealed that the bid committee, chaired by Mainasara Illo, has prepared a comprehensive dossier to strengthen Nigeria’s case during engagements with the Evaluation Committee, led by Darren Hall, Director of Games and Assurance at the Commonwealth Sport.

The Federal Government also demonstrated its political will, with the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, hosting the Commonwealth delegation on behalf of President Tinubu.
The high-level meeting included nine members of the Federal Executive Council, among them Minister of Youth Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Culture and Creative Economy Hannatu Musa Musawa, Minister of Women Affairs Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, and Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal. Also present were Chairman of the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission Charles Ebuebu and other senior officials.
The visiting Commonwealth Sport team comprised Darren Hall, Ann-Louise Morgan, Director of Sport, and Ezera Tshabangu, Regional Development Manager for Africa and Europe.
If successful, Nigeria’s bid would make history by bringing the Commonwealth Games to Africa for the very first time in its 90-year history.
