Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has revealed that about ₦20 billion has been raised towards the completion of the long-abandoned National Library project.

She made the disclosure on Tuesday during a luncheon with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, held to mark her 65th birthday.

According to Mrs Tinubu, the initiative was conceived as her legacy gift to the nation. Instead of receiving the usual birthday cakes, adverts and presents, she appealed to Nigerians to channel their goodwill into supporting the National Library through the Oluremi @65 Education Fund.

“I want to clear the air about some people saying it has a political undertone. What is wrong in doing well?” she said.

The First Lady explained that her decision was inspired by her background and long-standing passion for education. She recalled her 12 years of service in the Senate, during which she was a member of the Committee on Education, as well as her personal experiences of how libraries shaped her formative years.

“From a humble background, the library played a role in my life. That’s why I thought this is a worthy cause,” she said.

Mrs Tinubu stressed that education remains central to national development and pledged to continue supporting projects that will benefit future generations.

The National Library of Nigeria, conceived over three decades ago, has faced repeated delays due to funding and administrative challenges. The fresh ₦20 billion injection, she noted, is expected to accelerate work on the project and bring the vision closer to reality.
