Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) has criticised the Lagos State Government for admitting that many Lekki Peninsula residents may be drinking contaminated borehole water, calling the comment proof of years of failed governance.
The group was reacting to remarks by Mahmood Adegbite, Permanent Secretary in the Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources, who said residents were “probably drinking what I will call ‘shit water’.”
CAPPA said the blunt remark drew attention to a deeper crisis decades of underinvestment in public water systems that have forced residents to rely on boreholes and wells.

Executive Director Akinbode Oluwafemi accused the state of neglecting its constitutional duty to provide safe water, exposing citizens to health risks while attempting failed privatisation models.
CAPPA urged urgent public investment in water and sanitation, a halt to market-driven reforms, and a transparent, community-led governance plan to fix broken wastewater systems and serve underserved communities.
