Kano State has recorded a double triumph in the 2025 National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE), with 68 inmates excelling under the state’s correctional education programme, while the state also emerged as the best-performing in the country.

The spokesperson of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Kano State Command, Musbahu Lawan, confirmed that the inmates sat for the examinations under the Centre for Inmates’ Continuity Education, fully sponsored by the Kano State Government.

He said the initiative aligns with the Correctional Service Act, 2019, which promotes rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates through education and vocational training.

Lawan quoted the Controller of the Command, Ado Inuwa, who hailed the inmates’ success as “a remarkable achievement” and proof of the power of second chances.

He added that the move was consistent with the directive of the Controller General of Corrections, CGC Sylvester Indidi Nwakuche, for correctional facilities nationwide to prioritise academic and skills-based training.

Chairperson of the State’s Prerogative of Mercy, Hajiya Azumi Namadi Bebeje, congratulated the inmates, noting that Governor Abba Yusuf’s continued investment in prison education reflects his compassion and belief in human transformation.

Some of the successful candidates described their achievement as a “turning point”, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to pursue education despite their circumstances.

Beyond the correctional centres, Kano State also topped the national NECO 2025 performance chart, with 68,159 candidates — representing 5.02 per cent of the national total — securing five credits and above, including English and Mathematics.

The achievement places Kano ahead of Lagos State with 67,007 candidates and Oyo State with 48,742.

NECO Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Wushishi, announced the results in Minna, Niger State, stating that 1,358,339 candidates registered for the June/July examinations. Of these, 818,492 students (60.26 per cent) passed with five credits, including Mathematics and English, while 1,144,496 candidates (84.26 per cent) passed with five credits or more in any subject.

Reacting to the results, Governor Yusuf’s spokesperson, Sunusi Tofa, described the feat as “a reflection of the tireless work and vision” of the administration.

He noted that the governor’s education reforms, including investment in teachers and improved access to quality learning, have begun yielding results.

“This success belongs to every teacher, student and parent who has supported our reforms. It shows that when education is prioritised, the results speak for themselves,” Tofa said.

Education analysts say the milestone sets a benchmark for other states to emulate, underlining the potential for transformative growth within Nigeria’s education system.
