Former chairman of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Israel Ogbue, has passed on at the age of 99.

UBA reportedly announced this in a statement released on Thursday.

Ogbue was the father of Awele Elumelu, chairman of Transcorp Hotels, and father-in-law to Tony Elumelu, current chairman of UBA Group.

The bank described Ogbue as a revered boardroom statesman and distinguished administrator who passed away peacefully.

Ogbue joined the UBA board in 2005 as a non-executive director and was appointed chairman in 2011.

He retired in 2013 after overseeing a significant period in the bank’s evolution.

The bank recalled that he provided “steady and principled leadership” during a defining period in its transformation, reinforcing a culture of corporate governance, accountability and long-term sustainability.

Born on February 18, 1927, in Onicha-Olona, Delta state, Ogbue began his career in the federal civil service before travelling to the United Kingdom for further studies.

He built an accomplished career that saw him rise through senior management ranks at the National Insurance Corporation of Nigeria (NICON), where he served with distinction until his retirement in 1988.

His reputation for governance expertise subsequently earned him appointments to the boards of several leading institutions, including UBA

UBA described him as a devoted family patriarch who often attributed his longevity to God’s grace and encouraged younger generations to pursue ambition with moderation and remain steadfast in adversity.

“UBA Group extends its heartfelt condolences to his children, grandchildren, extended family, friends and associates,” the bank said.

“We celebrate a remarkable life of service, wisdom and impact, and we honour his invaluable contributions to UBA and to Nigeria’s corporate landscape. He is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren,” the bank stated.

It added that funeral arrangements will be announced by the family in due course.
