FCT Police Rescue Suspected ‘One Chance’ Robbers from Mob Attack

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has rescued two suspected “one chance” robbery suspects from being lynched by an irate mob in Abuja, strongly condemning acts of jungle justice and urging residents to report suspected crimes to the authorities.

The incident occurred on Thursday, January 29, 2026, at about 11:00 a.m., after the Utako Police Division received a distress call that a mob had apprehended and was assaulting two suspected criminals.

This was made known in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on behalf of the FCT Police Command.

The statement said police operatives were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they successfully rescued the suspects, identified as Kefas Akaye and Uya Ugwowere, from the violent crowd.

It said preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects are members of a four-man gang allegedly involved in “one chance” robbery operations within the Federal Capital Territory. Further findings showed that the suspects reportedly travel from Uke in Nasarawa State into Abuja to carry out their criminal activities.

Police said two other members of the gang, identified simply as Mary and Aisha, escaped during the commotion and are currently being tracked.

While investigations are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects, the FCT Police Command reiterated its zero tolerance for mob violence, warning that jungle justice poses serious risks to innocent lives and the criminal justice process.

According to the Command, assaulting or lynching suspects not only violates the law but also compromises investigations by destroying vital evidence and making it difficult to identify and arrest accomplices. Such actions, it said, ultimately deny victims and society the benefits of lawful prosecution and possible recovery of stolen property.

The Police urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding, and vigilant, and to promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08032003913 and 08028940883.
