Northern Morocco on High Flood Alert as Loukkos River Swells

Authorities in northern Morocco raised the flood alert to maximum in Ksar El Kebir as heavy rains swelled the Loukkos River, threatening homes and streets.

Days of rain flooded streets and homes in Larache Province. Local authorities, emergency teams, and security forces responded quickly. Sand barriers line riverfront properties, while Governor Bouassam El Alamine inspects weak points along the river.

The Loukkos River Basin Agency said the region received over 600 mm of rain since September. The Oued El Makhazine dam is full, and officials are releasing water to reduce pressure and prevent downstream flooding. Rising river levels are overwhelming Ksar El Kebir’s drainage system, so extra pumps and crews are working to stop water from entering homes.

Flooding also affects other towns in northwestern Morocco. Tétouan–Sania R’mel Airport closed temporarily for safety checks. The General Directorate of Meteorology warned that more heavy rain and strong winds could hit several provinces, keeping flood risks high.
