Accord Party Demands Sacked APC Chairmen, Councillors in Osun Vacate LGA Secretariats

The National Leadership of the Accord Party has called on All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councillors in Osun State, recently removed by court rulings, to immediately vacate Local Government secretariats.

The officials’ elections were nullified by the Federal High Court, Osogbo, in November 2022, and the Court of Appeal upheld the judgment on February 10 and June 13, 2025, citing violations of legal requirements. The party argued that the tenure of the APC officials expired on October 22, 2025.

“There is no justification whatsoever for them to continue occupying Local Government secretariats in Osun State, backed and protected by the police, as if Nigeria is a banana republic with no rule of law,” said Maxwell Mgbudem, National Chairman of Accord, in a statement. “It is outrageous and a calculated assault on the nation’s hard-earned democracy.”

The sacked chairmen and councillors had approached the Federal High Court seeking an extension of their expired tenure.

Accord condemned the move, describing it as an attempt to undermine justice and delay the handover of authority.

“This forum shopping is a delay tactic to continue the siege on Osun Local Government secretariats,” the party said. “There is no provision in the Constitution or the Electoral Act for tenure extension of elected officials. These anti-democratic actions mock representative governance and will be resisted by all lovers of democracy in Nigeria.”

Accord also demanded the immediate release of N130 billion in statutory allocations to Osun Local Governments, which it said has been illegally withheld by the federal government.

The party urged the Inspector General of Police to withdraw protection for the illegal occupants of the secretariats and to instead support the duly elected chairmen and councillors, sworn in on February 23, 2025, as ordered by the Osun State High Court.

It further called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene to restore order and democratic governance at the grassroots level in Osun.

The party praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for his political maturity, restraint, and respect for the rule of law in handling the crisis, despite provocations from the ex-APC officials and their sponsors.
