The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun mobilizing its members nationwide in preparation for a possible warning strike, as the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Federal Government approaches.

The ultimatum, announced on September 28, 2025, followed what the union described as the government’s continued neglect of long-standing issues affecting Nigeria’s university system.

Government’s Silence Sparks Fresh Tension

In a circular dated October 5, 2025, and signed by ASUU President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, the union expressed disappointment over the government’s “continued silence and lack of commitment” to resolving critical concerns within the education sector.

According to the document, ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC), at an emergency meeting held on September 29, 2025, reviewed a referendum conducted across its branches and consequently resolved to issue the 14-day ultimatum.

The union said the action was aimed at compelling the Federal Government to sign and implement the renegotiated agreement that had been transmitted to it since February 2025.

No Meaningful Progress — ASUU President

Prof. Piwuna lamented that, despite officially notifying the Ministers of Labour and Education as well as the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), there had been no meaningful engagement or progress.

“I regret to inform you that there is no meaningful development deserving of any consideration to be reported,” he stated.

He explained that the current mobilisation effort seeks to pressure the government into honouring its commitments, including implementation of the long-awaited agreement and other unresolved demands.

Union Calls for Unity Ahead of Possible Strike

As the ultimatum enters its final week, Piwuna commended ASUU members for their patience and resilience throughout the negotiation process, describing it as “tortuous and unjustifiably prolonged for over eight years.”

He urged all members to intensify mobilisation in their respective campuses to ensure unity of purpose and readiness for the union’s next line of action.

“The days ahead call for mobilisation of every member of our union to ensure unity of purpose. No one should be left out of the struggle to defend our welfare, stem the Japa syndrome, and reposition the Nigerian University System for global competitiveness,” he said.

The ASUU President reminded members to take directives only from branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators, and to attend congress meetings regularly for updates.

He reaffirmed that the union’s collective strength remains its greatest weapon in the struggle for a revitalized and globally competitive university system.
