Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he is prepared to drop his presidential ambition in 2027 if a younger, vibrant and widely accepted candidate emerges under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Atiku, a key figure in the opposition coalition, disclosed this in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service on Wednesday. He stressed that his participation in the 2027 race is not driven by personal ambition but by the need to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative to those currently in power.

He urged young Nigerians to take an active role in politics, assuring them of his full support should one of them be chosen to fly the party’s flag in the presidential election.

“My being in the 2027 race does not prevent anyone from contesting. If a vibrant and widely accepted younger candidate emerges, I am willing to step aside,” Atiku said.

The former Vice President dismissed claims that he was desperate to occupy the presidency, insisting that his concern is to rescue Nigeria from what he described as the grip of those who have held the country hostage.

Atiku, who has remained a recurring figure in Nigeria’s presidential contests since 1993, emphasised that his priority is national interest rather than personal ambition.
