Warri-Itakpe Train Crash Victims Leave Hospital as NRC Completes Recovery Operations

Nearly two weeks after the tragic Warri–Itakpe train accident that claimed five lives, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced that all injured passengers have been discharged from hospital.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NRC, Mr. Kayode Opeifa, disclosed this on Tuesday, noting that the victims who were receiving treatment at a medical facility in Agbor, Delta State, had recovered sufficiently to return home.

However, he revealed that one member of the corporation’s staff who sustained severe injuries in the accident remains under specialist medical care.

According to Opeifa, the successful discharge of the injured passengers marks a significant milestone in the corporation’s response efforts following the June 8 incident involving the Ujevwu, Warri-bound train.

The accident involved a train carrying 482 passengers and crew members. Five people lost their lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The NRC boss expressed gratitude to medical personnel, emergency responders, security agencies and members of the public who contributed to the rescue and recovery efforts.

Condolences to Bereaved Families

While providing the update, Opeifa once again conveyed the corporation’s sympathy to families who lost loved ones in the crash.

He said the NRC remains committed to supporting affected families during this difficult period.

“We once again extend our condolences to the families of the deceased and pledge to continue standing with them during this difficult time,” he stated.

In another development, the NRC confirmed that all equipment involved in the accident has been successfully recovered.

The corporation said the recovery operation was completed as part of ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and ensure a comprehensive assessment of the incident.

The recovery of the affected rail assets is expected to aid investigators and technical teams working to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and strengthen safety measures across the rail network.
