The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has raised concern over a surge in attacks targeting train operations along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, warning that the incidents pose serious threats to passenger safety and national infrastructure.
This follows a recent attack near kilometre 177 of the Abuja–Kaduna Highway, where suspected villagers reportedly gathered along the rail track and hurled stones at a moving train. The assault damaged the windscreen of the lead locomotive, heightening fears over the vulnerability of the route.
In a statement issued by NRC spokesperson Callistus Unyimadu, the Corporation described the development as alarming, revealing that similar incidents have occurred repeatedly in recent weeks.
He disclosed that at least six separate attacks have been recorded within two weeks, including incidents around Gidan Busa and Sarki Gora Village in Kakau District, located in Chikun Local Government Area.

According to the NRC, the persistent attacks not only endanger passengers and railway personnel but also threaten critical infrastructure and investments in the rail sector.
“The repeated acts are not only dangerous but amount to economic sabotage capable of disrupting national transportation and undermining government investments in the railway sector,” the statement noted.
Despite the growing security concerns, the Corporation said train services have continued under heightened safety protocols, with staff maintaining strict vigilance to ensure safe travel for passengers.
The NRC added that it is working closely with security agencies, community leaders, and other stakeholders to strengthen surveillance along the corridor, identify those responsible, and bring perpetrators to justice.
It also called on residents of communities along the rail lines to support efforts to safeguard railway infrastructure by reporting suspicious activities and discouraging acts of vandalism.
The Corporation warned that continued attacks could ultimately disrupt service delivery if urgent and collective action is not taken.
