The United States has condemned the deadly attacks on Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State, calling the incident “horrific” as casualty figures continue to rise.

While the Nigerian Police reported 75 deaths, local sources and international observers estimate the toll at over 160, with many still unaccounted for.

“The United States condemns the horrific attack in Kwara State, which claimed the lives of more than 160 people. Our deepest condolences go to the families affected by this senseless violence,” the US Mission in Nigeria said in a statement posted on X.

The statement also welcomed President Bola Tinubu’s security response, including the deployment of troops to the affected communities and directives to provide aid and pursue justice for the perpetrators.

Earlier, Tinubu approved the creation of a new military command and ordered an army battalion to Kaiama. The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, dispatched tactical and intelligence teams to restore calm.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq said the deployment of troops under Operation Savannah Shield would deter further violence, noting that security forces were already on the ground.

The US condemnation follows similar reactions from the United Nations and the Republic of Türkiye, underscoring international concern over the escalating violence in Kwara.
