Bandits who abducted about 35 worshippers from the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, have reportedly demanded N100 million ransom for each victim.

The attack occurred on Tuesday evening, during a church service, when gunmen killed some worshippers and abducted others. A live-streamed video captured the service as sporadic gunshots were heard around the church premises.

Multiple family sources and community leaders confirmed on Thursday that the abductors had contacted relatives using the victims’ phones, systematically demanding ransom. Josiah Agbabiaka, secretary of the CAC assembly, said the victims were grouped, with the first group of 11 people each carrying a N100 million ransom demand.

Olusegun Olukotun, Olori Eta of Eruku, whose four family members were abducted, said: “Some people in the community have received calls from the kidnappers demanding N100 million for each person. They said the victims were grouped and are calling each group’s relatives.”

Olukotun, who escaped through a church window with one family member, described the attackers’ systematic approach to contacting families.

The traditional ruler of Eruku, Oba Busari Olarewaju, has appealed for urgent government intervention to secure the victims’ safe release.

He commended the swift deployment of military personnel following a visit by Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Wednesday, but urged intensified efforts to rescue the captives quickly.

“Their presence gave us some assurance that the government is responding. But we are still appealing that efforts should be intensified to rescue our people as quickly as possible,” Oba Olarewaju said.
