Sanwo-Olu Unveils 24 New Car-Trains to Boost Lagos Red Line Capacity

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has announced the arrival of new train sets aimed at expanding capacity and improving commuter experience on the Lagos Red Line rail corridor.

The governor disclosed on Thursday that the state had taken delivery of additional rolling stock to strengthen operations on the line, which connects key parts of the city.

“We have received a new set of 24-car trains to strengthen the Lagos Red Line fleet,” Sanwo-Olu said. “This will improve capacity, reduce wait times and make daily commuting easier for Lagosians.”

He added that the government remains committed to building a more efficient and reliable mass transit system for the state.

The newly delivered coaches are arranged into three train sets and are expected to increase the number of trips and overall service efficiency on the corridor.

The Red Line, managed by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), currently operates two Talgo Series 8 train sets along the Agbado–Oyingbo route, which began commercial service after its commissioning in February 2024.

With the new additions, the state plans to scale up operations, with LAMATA targeting about 37 daily trips on the line and a long-term goal of moving more than 500,000 passengers each day.

The 27-kilometre rail corridor runs from Agbado to Oyingbo, passing through major commercial and residential areas such as Ikeja, Oshodi, Mushin and Yaba. It is also designed to connect with the Blue Line at Marina as part of a broader integrated transport system across Lagos.

According to LAMATA, the expansion is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity and drive economic activity along the corridor, while future plans include extending the line to the National Theatre and linking it directly to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport and the domestic terminal in Ikeja.
