The Presidential Working Group on the National Policing Bill has extended deadline for the submission of memoranda and position papers on the proposed legislation to 5 pm on Friday, August 21, 2026.
The extension was announced on Thursday by Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu and Chairman of the Presidential Working Group.
The group had initially set August 13 (today) as the deadline for submissions.
Gbajabiamila said the extension would give stakeholders more time to prepare and submit detailed contributions to the proposed legislation.
He said the working group was committed to ensuring that the development of the National Policing Bill reflected broad consultations and the views of Nigerians and relevant stakeholders.
The proposed bill is expected to establish the operational, administrative, institutional and funding framework for a more effective policing system, while providing safeguards for accountability, professionalism and the protection of citizens’ rights.
Gbajabiamila urged legal practitioners, civil society organisations, security professionals, state governments, professional bodies, academics, experts and members of the public to use the additional time to submit their memoranda and position papers.
“All submissions must be made on or before 5:00 p.m. WAT on Friday, August 21, 2026, exclusively through the official National Policing Bill portal, nationalpolicingbill.com,” he said.

The working group said key issues requiring stakeholder input include sustainable funding, command and control structures, recruitment and training standards, operational jurisdiction, inter-agency coordination, accountability mechanisms and safeguards against political interference or abuse.
Gbajabiamila said these issues made broad stakeholder engagement necessary to produce a policing framework that is effective, accountable, sustainable and responsive to the security needs of communities across the country.
At the end of its assignment, the Presidential Working Group is expected to submit a final, implementation-ready draft of the National Policing Bill for legislative consideration.
The chairman thanked stakeholders who had already submitted their contributions and encouraged others to take advantage of the extended deadline.
