A violent clash aboard an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos on Sunday ignited widespread outrage on social media. The incident raised urgent questions about passenger conduct and airline safety in Nigeria.
Comfort Emmanson, a female passenger, attacked an air hostess and struggled with airport security at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. Airport security eventually forced her off the plane. Videos of the event quickly spread online, sparking sharp criticism of the passenger and praise for the crew’s professionalism.
Eyewitnesses and social media users took to X (formerly Twitter) to share their views.
Ayodeji Akintubi wrote, “When we told you KWAM 1 goofed and should have been treated differently, you ignored it. KWAM 2 had a mentor and pulled a stunt with Ibom Air. I love how she was bundled off the aircraft.”
Terailz added, “A female passenger on an Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Lagos caused chaos at the airport, assaulted an air hostess, and fought security before being removed.”
Others praised the calmness of the crew. Chris Okonkwo tweeted, “The Ibom Air hostess showed golden professionalism. She stayed calm even while physically assaulted.”
However, critics blamed lax enforcement. One commenter wrote, “We all saw this coming. When the government ignored the first Kwam incident, this was bound to happen. A country without laws!”
Incident Details: Airline Statement
Ibom Air said the trouble began before takeoff from Uyo. Emmanson refused to switch off her phone despite repeated instructions from the purser and a pilot announcement.
A nearby passenger finally turned off the phone, but Emmanson continued to shout and cause a scene.
After landing in Lagos, she confronted the purser again. She tore off the purser’s wig, removed and threw her glasses to the floor, slapped her several times, and struck her with her shoe.
Emmanson also attacked other crew members and tried to grab a fire extinguisher, which could have endangered the flight.
Airport and airline security teams intervened, struggled with her, and finally restrained her. Video clips of the incident quickly went viral.
Official Response and Consequences
Michael Achimugu, Ibom Air’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, condemned the passenger’s behaviour. He urged passengers to respect simple safety rules like switching off phones during takeoff and landing.
Ibom Air banned Emmanson from flying on any of their aircraft in the future. The airline reported the incident to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). Airport security handed her over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.

The incident renewed calls for stricter enforcement of passenger discipline and tougher penalties for disruptive behaviour on Nigerian flights.
Experts warn that violence against airline crew threatens the safety of all passengers onboard.
As authorities investigate the incident, Ibom Air’s prompt action and ban on the passenger received praise. The case highlights ongoing challenges Nigerian airlines face in maintaining safety and order amid rising onboard tensions.
