The Osun State Government has demolished 30 buildings erected on waterways as part of measures to avert flooding in the state.
Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, confirmed the exercise on Sunday, saying the targeted structures were in swampy areas and along riverbanks flagged by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET) as potential flood risks.
“We removed about 15 structures in Osogbo, six in Ile-Ife, six in Ilesa, and others in different towns. This is to ensure residents’ safety,” he said.
Adejoorin noted that property owners were given warnings and ultimatums before the demolition.

He explained that the state had also dredged waterways and cleared refuse to prevent blockages, stressing that public safety remained a priority. He urged residents to stop dumping waste in waterways and to comply with environmental laws to avoid sanctions.
