Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has called on President Bola Tinubu to resign from office, arguing that the President no longer has the capacity to address Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges.
Obi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Sunday, where he accused Tinubu of failing to provide the leadership needed to move the country forward.
According to the former Anambra State governor, Nigeria requires a committed and energetic leader capable of confronting the country’s pressing problems, including poverty, insecurity and hunger.

He said Tinubu, who served as governor of Lagos State, was no longer the same person leading the country today.
“The Bola Tinubu that was governor is not the one that is president today. He’s tired. He should be allowed to retire in peace and then go home,” Obi said.
“As it is right now, Bola Tinubu is leading us nowhere. The man should just step aside. He doesn’t have the capacity to do the job,” he added.
Obi also expressed concern over the country’s rising poverty rate, saying political leaders were focusing on the wrong issues instead of addressing the hardship faced by millions of Nigerians.
Citing recent projections by the World Bank, he said nearly 80 per cent of Nigerians could be living in poverty, describing the situation as one that should dominate national discourse.
He also lamented the increasing number of out-of-school children, insecurity and cases of kidnapping, while raising concerns over funds he said could have been invested in critical sectors.
“The World Bank has just said that 79 per cent of Nigerians are going to face poverty. In a country of 230 million people, that’s over 180 million. That should be the issue we should be discussing,” Obi said.
He further called for the 2027 general election campaigns to centre on issues affecting ordinary Nigerians rather than political distractions.
“The World Food Programme has just said 35 million Nigerians are going to face hunger. Nigerians are being kidnapped. Let’s talk about Nigeria,” he added.
