Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a “destroyer of democracy” and suggesting his administration compares unfavourably with the military era of Sani Abacha.
Obi, who is now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the remarks on his official X account on Thursday.
He said it was ironic that individuals who once positioned themselves as defenders of democracy and human rights during the Abacha regime now preside over what he described as a decline in those same values.

“What an irony of history,” Obi wrote, adding that those who claimed to have fought for democracy in the past now appear worse than the system they once opposed.
Tinubu Worse Than Abacha:Obi
“Today, General Sani Abacha, once presumed face of oppression, will be remembered as seemingly more democratic and more respectful of human rights than the so-called champions of activism from the NADECO days. Power indeed reveals character”, he added.
Meanwhile, the ADC has accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of bias in its handling of the party’s leadership dispute and called for the resignation of its chairman.
The electoral body had on first of March announced that it would no longer recognise either the faction led by David Mark or that of Nafiu Bala Gombe, following a Court of Appeal directive for parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum, the position before the suit was filed at the Federal High Court.
