In a strategic move to boost investor confidence and streamline operations across Nigeria’s energy sector, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) have reaffirmed their commitment to a unified regulatory approach.
The commitment was solidified during a high-level meeting at the NUPRC headquarters in Abuja, where NUPRC Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, hosted the newly appointed Authority Chief Executive of the NMDPRA, Mr. Rabiu Abdullahi Umar.
Speaking during the engagement, NUPRC Commission Chief Executive, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, explained that the meeting aimed to strengthen the working relationship between the two regulators and pave the way for a more cohesive, industry-friendly regulatory framework across Nigeria’s entire petroleum value chain.
Both agencies used the opportunity to reaffirm their joint responsibility for the health of the sector—spanning upstream, midstream, and downstream operations—and their dedication to presenting a unified front on issues affecting operators and investors.
The regulators acknowledged that their mandates are rooted in the same foundational law—the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA)—and that the industry performs best when this common origin translates into coordinated action.

Mrs. Eyesan highlighted the shared sense of purpose driving the collaboration, pointing to the absence of fuel supply disruptions in recent months, despite significant global pressures, as clear evidence that coordinated regulation is already delivering results.
Echoing her sentiment, the NMDPRA Chief Executive described both bodies as inseparable partners in Nigeria’s energy future.
The regulators also recognised the enabling environment fostered by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, particularly through decisive policy interventions and the harmonization of fiscal and security frameworks across relevant government agencies.
