The Lagos State Government has expressed concern over the collapse of a bungalow classroom block at Odokekere High School, Ikorodu, while assuring parents and the public that no lives were lost in the incident.
In a statement, the Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools (SCRPS) described the development as unfortunate, saying it received reports of the collapse with shock.
According to the committee, preliminary findings showed that the affected classroom block had already been identified and marked for demolition under an ongoing state programme aimed at replacing ageing school structures with more durable buildings.
“The classroom block had earlier been slated for demolition as part of efforts to construct a more befitting structure capable of accommodating the growing student population,” the committee stated.

SCRPS confirmed that no casualties were recorded, stressing that all students were safe and unharmed at the time of the collapse.
“We wish to clearly state that no casualty was recorded in the building collapse, and all students are in good condition,” the statement said.
Following the incident, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly directed that students affected by the collapse should be immediately relocated to neighbouring schools to ensure that academic activities continue without disruption.
The committee also disclosed that officials would conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the school to evaluate the extent of the damage and fast-track plans for the construction of a modern classroom block to replace the collapsed structure.
The state government reaffirmed its commitment to improving public school infrastructure and ensuring the safety of students and staff across Lagos.
