Nigeria, US Celebrate 20 Years of Military Health Collaboration

Senior defence and health leaders from Nigeria and the United States of America on Tuesday gathered at the Abuja Continental Hotel to mark the 20th anniversary of the partnership between the Nigeria Ministry of Defence Health Implementation Programme (NMODHIP) and the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR).

The event was attended by Nigeria’s Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Mattawale; US Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Richard Mills; Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Major General Paula C. Lodi, Commanding General of the US Army Medical Research and Development Command; Brigadier General I.B. Solebo, Director General of NMODHIP; Colonel Brianna Perata, Commander of WRAIR; Colonel Shannon Lacy, Director of WRAIR Africa; and Helina Meri, Country Director of WRAIR in Nigeria, alongside other senior officials from both countries.

In his remarks, Brigadier General Solebo said the collaboration has enhanced Nigeria’s military and public health response, expanded access to HIV care, established world-class laboratories, and trained thousands of health workers.

He added that the partnership has also supported groundbreaking research and stands as a model of resilience, innovation, and impact for soldiers, families, and communities.
