INEC Finally Recognises Ex Kwankwaso Ally, Agbo as NNPP National Chairman

Commission replaces Bala Yusuf with Agbo…

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially recognised Major Agbo as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), replacing Bala Yusuf.

The development was confirmed on Wednesday after INEC updated its online portal to reflect Agbo as the party’s national chairman.

The commission also uploaded the names of members of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), including Olaposi Oginni as National Secretary, Prince Adetoyese Omokanye as National Treasurer, Anthony Apugo as National Financial Secretary, and Asuquo Ibok as National Legal Adviser.

The recognition marks a major development in the prolonged leadership crisis that has divided the opposition party since the 2023 general elections, with rival factions laying claim to its leadership.

Major Agbo and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso however, were political allies in the NNPP before their relationship deteriorated into a leadership struggle after the 2023 general election.

Agbo Hails INEC Recognition

Addressing journalists in Abuja, Agbo described the update on INEC’s portal as confirmation of the legitimacy of his leadership.

He said the commission had completed the upload of the duly recognised National Working Committee under his leadership, adding that the move had strengthened the party ahead of future political activities.

Agbo also declared that the internal crisis involving Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Buba Galadima had come to an end, saying both leaders had gone their separate ways.

He commended the judiciary for upholding the rule of law, stating that the court had reaffirmed its role as the last hope of the common man.

NNPP Begins Preparations for 2027 Polls

Agbo disclosed that the party had commenced preparations for the 2027 general elections following INEC’s recognition of the new leadership.

According to him, the NNPP has started the process of uploading candidates for the 2027 elections after receiving the required access code from the electoral commission.

He said the party would field competent, credible and people-oriented candidates committed to good governance and national development, while urging Nigerians seeking positive change to join the party.

Calls for Security, Credible Elections

Agbo called for greater collaboration between the Federal Government and security agencies to address the country’s insecurity.

He urged authorities to strengthen intelligence gathering, improve inter-agency cooperation and deploy lawful measures to restore peace and protect lives across the country.

He also appealed to INEC to remain impartial and uphold the principles of free, fair, credible and transparent elections ahead of the 2027 general elections, stressing that public confidence in democracy depends on the integrity and independence of the electoral body.

Yusuf Reacts

Reacting to the development, Bala Yusuf confirmed he was aware that INEC had updated its records.

Yusuf and Agbo were both Kwankwaso former allies who later became rivals over party leadership and dominance.

Agbo had accused Kwankwaso of attempting to hijack the NNPP, while Kwankwaso’s camp rejected the claim.

The rivalry led to parallel leadership claims, court battles, and public exchanges.

Kwankwaso, however, exited the leadership battle after defecting to the ADC and later to the NDC, where he now serves as the vice-presidential candidate.

Recent court decisions and INEC’s recognition of Agbo as the NNPP national chairman have strengthened Agbo’s position in the prolonged leadership crisis.
