The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has elected Bala Mohammed as its new national chairman following the exit of Ajuji Ahmed.
Ahmed, who became acting national chairman in March 2024, recently defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, described Mohammed as an experienced administrator from Kaduna and a former national organising secretary of the NNPP.
Johnson said the new chairman brings experience and a strong commitment to the party’s grassroots philosophy.
The party warned of what it called an “assault on democracy” ahead of the 2027 general elections, citing worsening economic conditions and insecurity.

“We are witnessing a coordinated assault on the foundations of our democracy,” the statement said.
The NNPP listed sponsored internal crises, questionable legal battles, and what it described as growing democratic erosion as major concerns.
It said Mohammed’s emergence comes at a critical time and expressed confidence in his ability to strengthen party structures and prepare for the next elections.
“Our democracy is under attack, but the NNPP remains a sanctuary for the hopes of the common man,” the party said, adding that it is positioned to offer better governance.
Court Rules on NNPP Leadership
Meanwhile, a Kano State High Court has nullified the dissolution of the NNPP leadership in the state and affirmed Abdullahi Abiya as chairman.
The court held that the party’s National Working Committee acted outside its powers by dissolving the state structure without involving the National Executive Committee.
Justice Nasiru Saminu set aside the dissolution and issued a perpetual injunction restraining the party and its agents from interfering with the tenure of duly elected state, local government and ward executives in Kano.
The court also upheld the expulsion of Hashimu Suleiman Dungurawa, who had been presented as a parallel chairman, ruling that the action complied with the party’s constitution.
