‘I may not be Alive to Contest 2027 Election’ - NDC Presidential Candidate Obi

Presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has expressed concerns over his safety, saying that with the way the government is going, he is not sure of being alive to contest the 2027 general election.

Obi stated that because of his political stance, he has been an object of attack, which has affected his source of livelihood.

“Every single thing I do for a living, this government is frustrating it. Deliberately so. There’s even the possibility that if they have the opportunity, I will not be alive,” Obi stated in an interview with popular YouTuber Chude.

“I get frustrated every day. You do things that you think will be normal. It is not normal any longer. They will not come directly, but you could see their hand in virtually everything,” Obi stated.

“They are attacking everybody; I am being attacked personally in everything. Even to provide me with the necessary things that I should have been entitled to, not do so at all. I had a case recently at the airport where people who work in the airport came and locked my car, and I said it was me, but they didn’t care even when there were cars of other people.”

He alleged that political leaders have succeeded in breeding hatred and dividing the country with their divisive rhetoric.

The former Anambra State governor reaffirmed his commitment to reuniting the country and promoting peace, love, and care in a new Nigeria.

As an opposition force, Obi has been criticising the current administration, accusing it of corruption and a lack of compassion in leadership.

Recently, Obi called on President Tinubu to resign from office, arguing that he has demonstrated incompetence, lack of capacity, compassion, and failure to improve on his campaign promises.

His call drew nationwide reactions. While some supported his call, others accused him of being excessive in opposing the government of President Bola Tinubu

While reacting to a recent report by the IMF, which said that about N8.83 trillion in expenditure undertaken in 2025 is not reflected in Nigeria’s budget, Obi described such a development as “horrible”.

He said the amount constitutes about 2% of Nigeria’s GDP, is more than the actual released capital funding for 2025, and is more than the entire combined budget for education (N3.52 trillion) and health (N2.38 trillion).

He pointed out that the amount, if properly used and accounted for, could transform Nigeria’s public health and education sectors, create hundreds of cottage industries that can provide jobs for thousands of Nigerians and build a solid foundation for economic development.

“But we cannot account for it. This is not an isolated incident. This is a pattern of grand corruption that has become part of this administration. We have a lot to worry about regarding the state of corruption under President Tinubu. The sort of corruption that is ingrained in total disregard of elementary rules of public finance management poses a grave danger to national security and the stability of the Nigerian state,” Obi stated on Sunday, July 5.
