Rivers Assembly Pushes Ahead with Fubara’s Impeachment

The Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday said it would proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, despite claims by the state government that no impeachment notice has been formally served on the governor.
The lawmakers made the declaration during an ongoing press conference in Port Harcourt, reaffirming their resolve amid the deepening political crisis in the state.
However, the Rivers State Government has denied reports that impeachment proceedings have been officially communicated to the governor.
Speaking on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the governor’s Special Adviser, Darlington Orji, said Fubara had not received any notice from the House of Assembly as of Friday morning.
Orji said the governor only became aware of the alleged impeachment move through reports in the print and electronic media, stressing that no formal correspondence had been delivered to him.

He criticised the Assembly, saying it had earlier announced it would go on recess and reconvene around January 28, 2026, but later convened an emergency sitting outside the agreed timetable.
According to Orji, Governor Fubara was not in the state at the time of the sitting, dismissing suggestions that he deliberately avoided the Assembly or fled to escape impeachment proceedings.
“The governor is not afraid of service because there is nothing to hide,” Orji said, insisting that claims of an impeachment notice being served were inaccurate.
The development comes against the backdrop of a prolonged political face-off between the governor and the state legislature, which has continued to fuel uncertainty and tension in Rivers State.
