The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected moves by the State House of Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, describing the development as untenable and a threat to the stability of the state government.

The party cautioned lawmakers against actions capable of plunging the state into political turmoil, insisting that the impeachment move should be discontinued in the interest of peace and democratic governance.

The Rivers State House of Assembly commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Fubara, with the Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, accusing the governor of gross misconduct and describing his emergence as a mistake.

Reacting in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the APC Rivers State said its attention had been drawn to what it described as unfortunate developments emanating from the Assembly.

While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the legislature and its role in checks and balances, the party said it could not support the impeachment of a governor elected under its platform.

The APC noted that it would be unacceptable for internal disputes traceable to past crises within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to be imported into the APC-led government in the state.

Addressing claims that the impeachment threat was linked to budgetary issues, the party recalled that during the period of emergency rule, a one-year budget of ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025 and duly approved by both chambers by July 2025.

According to the APC, the budget is expected to run until August 2026, adding that the governor reserves the right not to present a supplementary budget if satisfied with its provisions.

It further stated that the constitution permits a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year by a state governor.

The party urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, particularly APC lawmakers, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government led by Governor Fubara.

It warned that the party would not stand by while an APC government in the state is undermined by internal disagreements, stressing its resolve to protect the administration from political sabotage.

The APC therefore called on lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that persisting with it could damage the image of the party and hinder the progress and development of Rivers State.

The party reaffirmed its commitment to democratic principles, urging that Rivers State should remain a democracy and not descend into what it described as “politicocracy.”
