The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified a leading governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Engineer Kayode Ojo, from contesting in its upcoming primary election.

The decision, which party sources say significantly alters the political landscape in favour of the incumbent governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, was reached on Thursday during a meeting of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) in Abuja.

Screening Panel Report Triggers Disqualification

According to party insiders, Ojo’s exclusion followed the recommendations of the screening panel set up to assess all aspirants for the Ekiti governorship race. His disqualification comes barely weeks after another contender, Olajumoke Olawuni, was dropped from the contest.

With the new development, only Governor Oyebanji and Omolayo Oluremi have been cleared to participate in the party primary.

Ojo, a businessman and veteran politician, has often clashed with the APC hierarchy in Ekiti. He previously challenged the party’s internal structures and contested for governor in 2018 under the APC platform.

“This is more about party stability than technical screening issues,” a senior party official told Vanguard, hinting that the decision was aimed at preventing a repeat of factional disputes that have previously weakened the APC in Ekiti State.

Enugu APC Executive Dissolved

In a separate development, the NWC also announced the dissolution of the APC State Executive Committee in Enugu. The move, described by insiders as “strategic”, is believed to be part of wider efforts to facilitate the anticipated defection of Governor Peter Mba from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.

Party officials said the decision was taken to “restructure and strengthen” the party’s leadership in Enugu ahead of upcoming political realignments in the South-East.

Both developments underscore what observers describe as the APC’s ongoing efforts to consolidate internal control and prepare strategically for key elections in 2026.
