Nigeria’s resident doctors have suspended their planned nationwide strike following what they described as “progress” in talks with the Federal Government over long-standing welfare concerns.
The decision was announced on Tuesday by the National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council.
According to the association, the suspension follows positive commitments from the government on key demands, including the payment of outstanding salary arrears, hazard allowances, and steps toward addressing issues around the Medical Residency Training Fund.
While the dispute has not been fully resolved, NARD said the government has shown renewed willingness to engage and address the concerns that triggered the strike threat.

The association directed its members across the country to resume duties by 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
Resident doctors in Nigeria have repeatedly clashed with the government over poor welfare conditions, delayed payments, and inadequate hospital infrastructure issues that have fueled ongoing tensions in the health sector.
These recurring disputes have also contributed to the migration of medical professionals abroad, worsening the shortage of healthcare workers in the country.
With the latest suspension, patients can expect a return to normal hospital services as both sides continue negotiations to resolve the outstanding issues.
