FCT Resident Doctors Vow to Continue Strike Until All Demands Are Met

Resident doctors under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (ARD-FCTA) have confirmed partial implementation of their outstanding demands by the government, but insist their ongoing indefinite strike will continue until all issues are fully addressed.

The President of ARD-FCTA, Dr. George Ebong, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday, acknowledging the payment of some salary arrears and allowances owed to members.

According to him, 28 doctors, who had been owed between one month and one year in arrears, received their payments two nights ago. He also noted that part of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) had been disbursed, with 103 out of 150 eligible doctors paid, while 47 are still outstanding.

“Salaries were also paid yesterday (Tuesday) from morning time. We are grateful to the Honourable Minister for the beginning of the implementation of our demands,” Dr. Ebong said.

He commended FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for his intervention, which he described as “a step in the right direction,” but stressed that the gesture remains insufficient to end the industrial action.

“These demands are crucial and form the prerequisite for suspending this strike both at the national level (NARD) and at the ARD-FCTA level. While dialogue is ongoing with the National Assembly and FCTA management, the indefinite strike will continue until the remaining issues are addressed,” Ebong said.

Unresolved Demands

The association listed pending issues that must be met before the strike can be suspended, including:

  • Payment of MRTF to the remaining 47 doctors
  • Six to seven months’ salary arrears for external resident doctors
  • Settlement of skipping arrears
  • Settlement of overdue promotion arrears
  • Payment of post-Part II conversion arrears
  • Implementation of CONMESS 25%/35% adjustment, already in effect in federal institutions
  • Payment of wage award
  • Settlement of 13 months’ hazard allowance since 2021
  • Employment of additional healthcare workers
  • Improved working conditions in FCTA health facilities

The ARD-FCTA reiterated that the government must not wait for strike actions before addressing issues affecting healthcare delivery.

Recall that Pinnacle Daily earlier reported that ARD-FCTA joined the nationwide indefinite strike by the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Saturday, November 1, 2025, citing unmet demands despite prior approvals by the FCT Minister.
