A heated online exchange between Grammy-winning singer Wizkid and Seun Kuti, son of late Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo Kuti, has divided Nigerian celebrities and sparked a wider debate over legacy, influence, and greatness in Nigerian music.
The dispute began about a week ago after Seun Kuti called out Wizkid’s fanbase, popularly known as Wizkid FC, for comparing the singer to his late father. Seun described the comparisons as disrespectful, insisting that Fela’s activism against corruption and state oppression placed him on an entirely different pedestal.
Seun Kuti launched a seven-day Instagram Live session during which he repeatedly criticised Wizkid FC. On Tuesday, January 21, 2026, the sixth day of the live sessions Seun escalated the rhetoric, openly cursing Wizkid’s fans and their parents while questioning Wizkid’s silence.
“I’ve been attacking Wizkid fans and Wizkid has done nothing,” Seun said. “I’m insulting and cursing you people and Wizkid has not said anything to protect you. Doesn’t that mean he doesn’t care about you?”
Following the remarks, many netizens accused Seun of indirectly attacking Wizkid himself rather than just his fans.
Wizkid Fires Back, Escalates Dispute
Breaking his silence in solidarity with his fans, Wizkid, who has previously expressed admiration for Fela—responded sharply, declaring himself bigger than the late Afrobeat legend. He also challenged Seun Kuti directly and questioned his personal achievements outside his father’s legacy.
“Fela fought for freedom, this fool dey fight FC,” Wizkid wrote. “Oloshi omo ale.”
Wizkid’s response intensified the feud, prompting Seun and some of his siblings to respond with insults directed at Wizkid’s parents and fans.
The controversy has since drawn reactions from entertainers, influencers, religious figures, and even politicians.
Comedian Edo Pikin, in an Instagram video, argued that Wizkid’s popularity should not be confused with historical greatness.

“History does not measure greatness with sound, it measures greatness with impact,” he said. “Fela’s songs were weapons against oppression. His voice challenged power, not applause.”
Gospel singer Testimony Jaga criticised Seun Kuti for reacting angrily to insults against his father after previously insulting Pastor Enoch Adeboye. He also described Fela as a negative influence on society.
“I have friends whose lives were destroyed because of Fela’s shrine,” Testimony said. “Is that the legacy you’re talking about? If you disrespect elders, your elders will also be disrespected.”
Popular influencer Esabod urged restraint, saying Seun should not drag Fela’s name into personal disputes.
“Fela isn’t just your father; he’s a father to millions,” she wrote. “But when you say ‘my father is bigger than everybody’s father,’ don’t be surprised if someone replies in kind.”
Comedian Funnybone also cautioned against excessive talk, noting that silence and restraint help preserve legacies.
Contrary Views Defend Wizkid
Disagreeing with claims that Fela remains greater, influencer Tosin Silverdam argued that Wizkid’s global success places him above the Afrobeat legend.
“Wizkid is the biggest Nigerian artiste ever, with over 10 billion Spotify streams,” he said. “Seun’s attacks are unprovoked and excessive.”
Nightlife figure Cubana Chief Priest criticised Seun’s approach, posting on X: “If Fela do DNA now, that boy fit no be him pikin.”
Other celebrities, including singer Portable and media personality Daddy Freeze, also joined the growing debate.
At the heart of the controversy is a broader question about how greatness should be measured through activism and historical impact or global relevance and commercial success. As opinions continue to clash, Fela Kuti’s legacy remains as powerful, polarising, and enduring as ever.
