FCCPC Withdraws Case Against MultiChoice Nigeria After Settlement

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has withdrawn the criminal charge filed against MultiChoice Nigeria Limited and its top executives following an amicable settlement between both parties.

FCCPC’s counsel, Daniel Amadi, informed Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court that the commission had filed a notice of withdrawal on August 16 after reaching a resolution with the company.

“The matter was slated for hearing, but we have filed a notice of withdrawal as both parties have settled,” Amadi said.

Counsel for the defence, Rolake Akingbola, raised no objection, leading Justice Omotosho to strike out the case.

The case stemmed from FCCPC’s allegations that MultiChoice violated consumer protection laws in Nigeria through unfair subscription practices and non-compliance with regulatory directives. The commission had accused the pay-TV operator of failing to grant customers fair compensation during service disruptions and of implementing price adjustments without adequate notice or regulatory approval.

Earlier in the year, the FCCPC had summoned MultiChoice management over complaints from subscribers regarding its DStv and GOtv platforms.

The company was also investigated for alleged breaches related to its automatic subscription renewal policy and customer service response time.

The recent withdrawal marks a significant de-escalation in the dispute between the regulator and the pay-TV provider, signalling a move toward greater cooperation in consumer protection compliance.
