The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disclosed that four serving governors elected on the platform of opposition parties are in advanced discussions to defect to the ruling party before the end of 2025.

According to the APC, the move is part of its broader political strategy to consolidate its hold on power and expand its national presence ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s National Vice Chairman (South-East), Dr. Ijeoma Arodiogbu, made the disclosure in an interview, naming the governors of Plateau, Taraba, Rivers, and Abia States as those being courted by the APC.

Talks with governors ‘at advanced stage’

“It is a possibility that the Plateau governor will join us, likewise his Taraba counterpart. We are also looking forward to receiving Rivers governor, Siminalayi Fubara, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State in our midst,” Arodiogbu stated.

He revealed that discussions with the governors were progressing well and that their defection could take place “in the coming weeks.”

“These are all high possibilities. We expect that to happen in the coming weeks before our congresses. Most of these defections are expected to happen before the end of this year. Once they happen, it will further confirm that the APC remains the dominant and most organised political platform in Nigeria,” he said.

‘APC growing as home for progressives’

Arodiogbu attributed the party’s growing influence to what he described as its reform-driven agenda and inclusive leadership style, which he said had continued to attract key political figures from across the country.

“The reality is that the APC has grown into a home for all progressives. Our growth isn’t just in numbers but also in the quality of leadership. Governors and other political figures are increasingly recognising that this party provides stability and direction for Nigeria’s democracy,” he added.

He further noted that the party’s National Chairman has maintained an open-door policy to accommodate politicians who share the vision of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Party optimistic ahead of congresses

“The national chairman has emphasised that the APC remains open to all. We are welcoming individuals of goodwill who support President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” Arodiogbu said.

He expressed confidence that the anticipated defections would further strengthen the APC’s structure ahead of its forthcoming congresses and enhance the party’s chances in the 2027 elections.
